PAYETTE, IDAHO — An Idaho family is grappling with unimaginable loss after their 18-month-old twins, Dallas and Tyson, were found dead in their home on May 1—just eight days after receiving a set of routine vaccinations. Local authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of death, including a standard homicide inquiry, as required in cases of unexplained fatalities involving children.
Andrea and Nathaniel Shaw brought their twins to a pediatric wellness visit on April 23, where the children received three vaccinations: Hepatitis A, the flu shot, and DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis). Andrea raised concerns during the visit, telling the pediatrician about a family history—on her husband’s side—of adverse reactions to the flu vaccine. According to Andrea, the pediatrician said it was safe to proceed.
In the hours following the shots, the children seemed fatigued but otherwise fine. That changed quickly. The next morning, the twins showed alarming symptoms: lethargy, blue lips, and sunken eyes. Tyson collapsed in the living room, unable to walk. Andrea and her mother-in-law rushed both children to the ER, where a physician, after learning about the recent vaccinations, speculated the twins could be having a reaction. The toddlers were monitored briefly, given Tylenol and popsicles, and sent home when they kept the food down.
For the next several days, the twins struggled with vomiting, diarrhea, and persistent fatigue. By April 30, the symptoms had largely subsided, and the children showed signs of recovery. That night, they went to bed in good spirits.
The next morning, Andrea found both children unresponsive. Emergency services arrived, but it was too late.
Police immediately began a criminal investigation, including seizing Andrea’s phone and interrogating both parents separately. Nathaniel was informed of the children’s deaths while at work—by a police officer answering his mother’s phone. He described the moment as surreal and devastating.
Authorities have not confirmed a cause of death. The Payette Police Department said toxicology results and autopsy reports are still pending. As of May 7, officials had not ruled the deaths homicides but maintained the investigation was active. A spokesperson for the family said the parents have submitted a report to the federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
In an interview with Children’s Health Defense, the grieving parents described the days leading up to their children’s deaths and the intense scrutiny they’ve faced since.
“I was telling them my truth and they were getting into my head that I had done it—and I know I hadn’t,” Andrea said of her police interrogation.
The twins, born prematurely but healthy, had hit their developmental milestones. “They were smart—very smart—kids,” said Nathaniel. “They were the light of everyone’s world that came into contact with them.”
The couple said their children did everything together—from talking and walking to sharing the same symptoms after their shots. While some may find the simultaneous deaths unusual, the parents said it fits the twins’ deep bond—and the shared family history of vaccine reactions.
The investigation is ongoing. Medical examiners have not released definitive conclusions, and no charges have been filed.
A fundraiser has been organized to support the family during the investigation.
